Skin Care Tips for Men

Today, it's all about tips for taking care of your skin - for men.

To get started, just remember this: cleanse, exfoliate, repair, moisturize, and protect. Cleanse the skin start by thoroughly cleansing your face with a chemical free cleanser - men's skin is 15% oilier than women's, has larger pores, and basically is just dirtier. Be sure to wash your neck, too, and rinse thoroughly. Cleansing should be part of your daily ritual, but the next step - exfoliate - should be reserved for once or twice a week.

Exfoliate the Skin

These "scrubs" help to remove dead skin cells and smooth the appearance of your skin - but be sure your exfoliating scrub is not so rough that it actually damages your skin. Mixing equal parts of sugar, and lemon provides a great all-natural scrub that you can make for a minimum cost of commercial exfoliators.

Skin Repair

Next, try applying an astringent or toner with glycolic or alpha hydroxy acids - this repairing step can help to maintain your skin's elasticity and actually shrink pore size.

Moisturize the Skin

Shaving helps to remove dead skin cells as well - just be sure to use new blades regularly, and keep your skin as soft as possible: moisturizing, even for oily skin, is the essential ingredient to a happy face here. In fact, overly dry skin is more prone to acne breakouts than properly moisturized skin, so be sure to stay on top of it. Don't forget your lips, which need care too. Try using an organic lip balm that has an SPF of at least 15, which helps to moisturize and protect your lips from the elements.

Protect the Skin

Which leads us to the grand finale: protect. Sunscreen is the best defense against damage, premature aging, and melanoma, especially if you work or spend a lot of time outdoors. You should also be sure to drink a ton of water, exercise (and sweat) regularly, bump up your vitamin C and E, and bump down alcohol intake, and definitely avoid smoking cigarettes. And, just remember - following a strict skin care regimen doesn't make you less of a man, just less of a cave man.
